Do not assume the test-optional policy extends to 2027
The university's published USA page explicitly describes SAT and ACT as optional for September 2025 and September 2026 entry. Because that wording does not yet cover September 2027, applicants should recheck the page before deciding whether to withhold a score. If scores are submitted under the current guidance, St Andrews publishes 1320+ SAT and 28+ ACT reference points.
Use Scottish flexibility deliberately
St Andrews' modular Scottish structure lets many first- and second-year students study subjects beyond their intended specialization before settling into honours work. That breadth can help a student test adjacent interests, but course combinations and prerequisites still constrain what is possible. Families should verify the actual program structure rather than assuming complete freedom.
Separate small-town fit from brand recognition
St Andrews is a compact coastal university town where academic and social life overlap closely. That can create the intimate community some American families want, yet it also means less city scale, fewer anonymous escape valves, and a distinctive local rhythm. A visit or serious lifestyle conversation is more useful than treating the setting as universally charming.
Model annual fee increases across four years
The 2026-27 overseas fee for Arts, Divinity, and Science is £33,250, while Medicine is higher. St Andrews states that fees for newer entrants are adjusted annually, typically by 3%-5%. A responsible budget therefore compounds a reasonable increase across the full course and adds accommodation, travel, daily living, and currency risk.
Who St Andrews may—and may not—suit
St Andrews may fit an academically focused student who wants a close community, tradition, Scottish degree breadth, and a town where the university shapes daily life. It may be a poor fit for a student who needs a large city, extensive anonymity, or a broad metropolitan social landscape. Neither prestige nor an American-friendly reputation resolves that fit question.
