The 2027 UCAS Application Timeline for American Students
For an American applicant, the safest UCAS calendar starts months before the official deadline. Course research, US-qualification checks, the three-question personal statement, and the school reference all have to converge before the application can be submitted. These are the official 2027 cycle dates and the practical Meritage work-back plan.

April 28 and May 12, 2026: research and application building begin
UCAS lists 2027 courses in its search tool from April 28, 2026. Undergraduate applications open on May 12. Students can register, enter their history, explore courses, and begin the application, but completed applications cannot yet be submitted to UCAS.
- Choose the intended subject and compare course modules.
- Check official US qualification requirements for every candidate course.
- Build an evidence inventory for the personal statement and brief the school counselor early.
Summer 2026: build the list, statement, and reference plan
Use the summer to narrow the list to a coherent set of up to five choices. Draft the three personal statement answers, document AP, IB, SAT or ACT results where relevant, confirm pending qualifications, and agree on an internal school deadline. The personal statement has a 4,000-character overall limit, including spaces, with at least 350 characters in each answer.
September 1, 2026: completed applications can be submitted
UCAS begins accepting completed 2027 undergraduate applications on September 1. This is an opening date, not a requirement to submit immediately. Submit only after the choices, qualifications, writing, and reference are accurate. Early submission does not repair a weak course list.
October 15, 2026 at 18:00 UK time: the early equal-consideration deadline
This deadline applies to Oxford, Cambridge, and most courses in medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine or veterinary science. Tests, written work, interviews, and course-specific requirements may create earlier preparation dates. American students should plan around UK time and the school's earlier reference deadline.
January 13, 2027 at 18:00 UK time: most undergraduate courses
This is the equal-consideration deadline for most undergraduate courses. UCAS must have the completed application, including the reference, by the deadline. A school or counselor may require the student's materials weeks earlier, so January 13 should never be the student's working deadline.
February 25 to July 1, 2027: Extra
UCAS Extra opens February 25 for eligible applicants who used all five choices and are not holding an offer. Extra works one choice at a time and is not a second five-choice application. UCAS lists July 1 as the last day to add an Extra choice for the 2027 cycle.
July 2, 2027 onward: Clearing and final cycle dates
Clearing opens July 2 for eligible applicants and vacancies appear in the UCAS search tool. UCAS lists September 23 at 18:00 UK time as the final date for 2027 applications and October 18 as the last date to add a 2027 Clearing choice. Availability is course-specific; families should confirm vacancies directly rather than treating Clearing as a guaranteed backup.
The practical US-family work-back calendar
Aim to settle the subject direction by early summer, verify the first list before senior year begins, complete a full personal statement draft before the school year becomes crowded, and give the counselor a clear UCAS reference brief. For October-deadline courses, testing and written-work preparation may need to begin much earlier.
