The University of York is a red-brick university founded in 1963. The city of York is famous for its medieval architecture, especially the towering York Minster cathedral and the narrow, timber-framed buildings that line the Shambles. Here are a few key facts about the university.

  • RANKINGS: The university is currently ranked 184th in the QS World University Rankings. It is ranked 17th in the UK in both the Times and Complete University guides.

  • SUBJECTS: The Times ranks York 54th worldwide for Arts and Humanities subjects (like history, literature, philosophy, politics, etc.)

  • LOCATION: The university is located in the city of York, which is about a two-hour train ride from London. York is located near other cities like Manchester, Sheffield, and Leeds.

  • RECREATION: If you love the outdoors, the university is not far from the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales national parks.

  • FUN FACTS: The university is one of a handful that uses the collegiate system, in which students belong to an individual college within the university. This is often where they live and socialize, especially in their first year.
